Quick Summary

Story

Whits Lakes Spring Trail is in Custer Gallatin Nation Forest. The trail features the Whits Lakes, a pair of small lakes located north of Hebgen Lake and just outside Yellowstone National Park.

The trial is popular for horseback riding and muddy most of the year. The mosquitoes and horse flies can be a nuisance, so we recommend bringing bug spray.

Unlike nearby lakes, the Whits Lakes remain clear from snow well into early winter.

The trail moves around wet marshland and ascends quickly for a short period. It's a short hike through lush forested area. The tall Fir Trees are beautiful in autumn and make the walk a cool one even in the heat of summer.

Directions to the Whits Lakes Trailhead From West Yellowstone:

  • drive 8.2 miles north on Highway 191
  • Turn east onto Highway 287 for 2.5 miles
  • turn right at Forest Service Road 791
  • from here, it's an easy 2 miles to the trailhead at the end of the road.
