Quick Summary

Story

Along the train tracks in Fort Benton, Montana sits a monument to "Faithful Shep." Shep was a Border Collie that stayed at the Great Northern Railway station in Fort Benton for nearly six years before passing.

In 1936 Shep's owner passed away. Shep saw his owner's body carried from the hospital onto a train and followed behind. The body was shipped east, but Shep never left the station, the last place he saw his owner.

The dog remained at the station, waiting for his master to return for the next five and a half years. He was killed by an oncoming train in 1942.

Shep had grown old during his time at the station. The station manager fed and cared for Shep until he slipped on the rails and was hit by train #235.

His story became an inspiration to people around the world. Ripley's Believe It or Not featured the dog about two years into his faithful vigil. Reader's Digest and Paul Harvey's radio broadcast also featured stories on Shep. Today you can visit his memorial site and learn more about the faithfulness of Shep.
