Lots of options for adventure at Silver Crest Winter Recreation Area. This is a great spot for snowshoeing or cross country skiing, with lots of options to choose short or long trails (link to trail system map: https://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/fseprd525571.pdf ).
The dedicated snowshoe trails do not allow snowmobiles, and if you go after a fresh snowfall you'll likely be the first one breaking the powder. Trails are well marked with typical trail signage, red diamonds, markers, etc, but there are usually nice pamphlets stocked near the warming booth that are handy to take along as well.
The parking lot is large and usually moderately plowed in the winter, although 4x4 is a plus. There is a pit toilet in the parking lot that seems to stay unlocked year round.
The warming hut has a little makeshift firepit on skis (and sometimes is stocked with firewood), so bring along the s'more making kit or cocoa and a kettle for great added fun! Who doesn't like some chocolate to top off a great hike?!
Bring the kids along in sleds for a great workout!
