Quick Summary

Story

Red Mountain Trail is in the Deerlodge National Forest near Butte, Montana. The trail is short and sweet and leads to a lookout building. The trail is out of the tree line, so you'll be fairly exposed. We recommend layers and sunscreen.

The trailhead is not obvious. The drive can be bumpy and rough. Some people park further down the road and extend their hike a bit. A high clearance vehicle might be necessary to get to the provided GPS coordinates.

From the lookout building, it's a short extension to Red Mountain. The trail that connects to the mountain is relatively evident from the building. It follows a ridge and gets very narrow. This section is short but not for the faint of heart. The trail drop-off is very steep.

If you have the heart to push through, the views of Table Mountain and Monument Peak from Red Mountain are outstanding. The extension to Red Mountain only adds about a mile there and back to the lookout building.
