Prospect Peak Trail is one of many trails in the Highwood Mountains, around the Thain Creek Campground. This trail is unique in its beauty and difficulty.
After the trailhead, you'll cross a couple of streams by a bridge. North Fork Highwood Creek Trail 423 takes you up an area covered in Willows and Aspens.
You'll reach a junction at the 2.5-mile mark. Keep going straight on 423, climbing steadily past the Kirby Cr. Trail 426.
The climb is relentless, but the reward is some fantastic views of Arrow Peak to the south, Baldy to the west, and the Rockies beyond the plains. If you follow the timbered ridge a few hundred yards more, there are spectacular views of Square Butte, the Bears Paw, Moccasin, Judith, and Big Snowy Mountains.
