Mortimer Gulch Trail is in the Lewis and Clark National Forest in Augusts, Montana. The trail makes for an excellent, scenic day hike.
To get to the gulch, you must follow the road for a mile before coming to a poorly marked intersection. If you take a left, you will remain in the forest. The trail leads you behind some private property up the gulch.
The area is beautiful, but there are homes in the area. They can make you feel less secluded and make the views seem less primitive. Eventually, the trail becomes more isolated. It's in pretty bad condition here. Several trees are blocking the path, and it becomes nearly indistinguishable. Getting lost can be easy.
The trail features impressive views of Sawtooth Ridge, Norwegian and French Gulch, and Gibson Reservoir. The surrounding peaks and lush forest also make for a stunning picturesque area.
Follow the Sun Canyon Road 208 - 27 miles northwest from Augusta, turning east (left) into the Mortimer trailhead parking area.
