Morrell Mountain Fire Lookout is the destination of a long hike and a short drive. A forest service road takes you about 1/2 a mile from the Morrell Mountain Fire Lookout.
There's a gate here, but it's open to the public. The area has been manned since 1921, but the current lookout building was built in 1961.
You can drive this road to the gate; however, the last eight miles are rocky and have multiple switchbacks, making it hard for some vehicles to make it to the end. Hopefully, this doesn't detour you from the adventure.
There are outstanding, panoramic views from the top! You can see the peaks in the distance, Seeley Lake, Placid Lake, and Browns Lake.
It's possible to adventure further. You can ascend north to the ridgeline path, which leads to the actual summit of Mt. Morrell.
Don't be surprised if you see bears, mountain goats, deer, elk, coyotes, mountain lions, chipmunks, gophers, ground squirrels, or rabbits in the area.
