Highwood Baldy Trail is a challenging climb in the Highwood Mountains near Great Falls, Montana. We only recommend this trail to experienced hikers who have spent time bushwhacking and creek wading before.
This trail is the way to the top of the tallest peak in the Highwoods. You start on Deer Creek Trail, which means wading at the first creek crossing. The other creek crossings are more easily navigated by hopping on rocks.
We recommend wearing long pants to avoid the wood rose and thistle growing on the trail.
The trail can be difficult to distinguish after the first trail marker. It becomes overgrown in areas and is completely lost except for elk and cow trails which spread out in various directions. From here, it's a straight climb to the ridge and the summit.
This is genuinely a rugged summit but a rewarding and beautiful journey!
A heads up, motorized vehicles are not allowed 6 miles after the trailhead.
