Garnet Mountain Trail is in the Custer Gallatin National Forest near Bozeman, Montana. The hike is short but steep. There's a steady incline for the first two miles, and then the final mile is incredibly steep. The last stretch is an ATV trail which is very rocky.
The trail leads you to a fire lookout cabin that was built in 1962. You can rent the fire lookout as a Forest Service Rental Cabin. To inquire about renting visit here. You can also pitch a tent in a meadow spot off the trail if you want to stay in the area overnight.
The end of the hike is beautiful and unique. It offers panoramic views of the Spanish Peaks, the Gallatin Range, and the Hyalite Ridge.
Parking is limited, and the trailhead is shared with the heavily-trafficked Storm Castle Trail. Get there early to find a spot.
