Freezout Lake is Montana's primary Snow Goose staging area near Choteau, Montana. As many as 300,000 Snow Geese and 10,000 Tundra Swans gather in this area each year. They rest at the lake before flying onward.
You can expect the Snow Geese to reach Freezout Lake in early March. During their visit, you can best see the birds from sunrise to about 10:00am and from about 4:30pm until sunset.
To get the most out of your birdwatching adventure at Freezout Lake, we recommend bringing a chair, binoculars or a telescope, a snack, and some warm clothing.
The lake is 40 miles west of Great Falls along US Highway 89 between Fairfield and Choteau.
