Quick Summary

Story

A lightly traveled area south of Chinook, Montana, is an excellent destination to see grassland birds.

The alfalfa, grassy foothills, streams with cottonwoods and heavy brush, pine, sage, and cliff habitats each make the area an ideal place for various bird species to frequent. The best viewing is from June through August.

The species that tend to frequent the area are the Sprague's Pipits, Clay-Colored Sparrows, Baird's Sparrows, Ferruginous Hawks, Long-Billed Curlews, Chestnut-Collared and McCown's Longspurs, Mountain Bluebirds, Swainson's Hawks, Golden Eagles, Lark Buntings, Sharp-Tailed Grouse, Bobolinks, Wilson's Snipes, Brown Thrashers, and Flycatchers.

From Cleveland Road and the provided GPS coordinates, take a left to Chinook or a right to Lloyd. It's a 20-mile loop from one to another.
