Quick Summary

Story

The Black Canyon Trail is a long and moderately difficult trail in Yellowstone National Park. The trail is very rocky with lots of loose rocks. Don't twist your ankle!

The trail is long, so it's necessary to plan ahead. Either have a second car in the parking lot at the trail's end (Blacktail Trailhead) or turn around at some point to finish where you started. Some people make camp and finish another day. There are many designated areas for camping along the way, so we suggest picking one and enjoying another day in the area.

This trail isn't great for younger kids, but some people have brought their older kids and enjoyed multiple days in the area.

The trail follows the river almost the whole time and is a consistently beautiful trek.

There is lots of wildlife in the area! There can be many animal carcasses around the trail, so bring bear spray and make lots of noise while you explore.
